So I wonder ... do aviation engineers study pictures like this when they're designing helicopters and things?

i'm pretty sure they do. i'm always amazed by how much we have to learn from nature, and how much we haven't yet thought of.
Did your husband take that photo? He is a freakishly good photographer. Man.
Wow! This is such a beautiful photo. When I was back east, I sat in my parents' backyard for hours trying to snap a picture or two of the hummingbirds that flew around like mad. I wasn't quick enough on the draw, though, so I wound up only with shots of things like their croquet set.
